Car Insurance Ram (Car Insurance). How to remove front discs? How to remove front discs? A Corsa 07,do I have to remove the large centre nut 35mm that holds the hub assembly to the drive shaft to renew the front brake discs ?,local dealer is unsure. This large nut has a knock down tang instead of a split pin and would need to be renewed if I have to take it off.Is there another way to take off the discs without removing the whole assembly ? The local dealer is only 'unsure' because they want to do it. the disks aren't held on by the center nut, take of the brake calliper, there might be a cross head screw or two holding them onto the hub but thats about it as far as im aware / i can remember, no you don't need to remove the nut your talking about ! remove the wheel, you will then remove the brake calliper, one of two things now ! = there may be a cross head screw holding the disk to the hub ! remove this, BE CAREFUL ERE ! this screw some times strips ! so you may need to give it a helping tap to loosen it ! 2 opp there may just be some kind of star washer on one of the wheel nut stubs ! remove this and the disc should come away ! it may be stuck with a little rust to the hub so again a good tap with an hammer will loosen it ! good luck On most cars nowadays, the discs are just fitted over the wheel studs with some fairly trivial fixing to stop them coming out of place when the wheel is removed. Get yourself a Haynes manual off ebay or somewhere. Local dealer wants to do it themselves as other person said. If you have to ask about this I would avoid doing it though. that big nut stays on there. that nut holds the front axle. just pull the caliper off and the rotor should slide off. Can you drive a semi-automatic on a manual UK licence officially and legally? Can you drive a semi-automatic on a manual UK licence officially and legally? I recently bought a car with a semi-auto, or ACS (auto clutch system), transmission. Although I hold a full UK manual licence (so have manual & auto entitlement), this has sparked some debate between me and my friends as to whether a car like this can be legally driven on a UK auto (class:b auto) category driving licence. I started with a Google search. And it seems that this question is shrouded with confusion. So I looked on DVLA, direct.gov and the Driving Standards Agency web sites and still drew a blank. I find this bemusing as more and more cars are being produced with this kind of gear box option. Often called tiptronic, something-else-tronic, flappy paddles etc. A lot of forums revealed confusion over what a semi-automatic or ACS is. Many contributors often referring to it being an automatic with a D (drive setting) and some selection control. Like the 1,2,3 settings on some Mercs I've had that allow the selection of 1st, 2nd or 3rd to help when traction is a problem like in snow or mud. This isn't a semi-auto at all. Semi-auto has no Drive setting. It always requires manual selections of the correct gear for the conditions, although using different gear selection techniques and removing the manual depressing of a clutch pedal. It still has a clutch but this is operated automatically by the car's systems. As an ex-driving instructor, from when semi-autos were just a new option on cars like Ferraris, I regard this as a manual transmission. Clutch operation is only 20-30% of the extra skills applied when driving a manual car when compared to an automatic. Having had this ACS car for almost a month now, it actually requires new skills I'm now learning as you can't introduce the road speed to the new selected gear as smoothly as you can in a manual when changing down for junctions and conditions. Hill starts are also still to master. As is maneuvering in tight spaces. However, also from the point of view of an ex-driving instructor, it wouldn't surprise me if these were officially legal to be driven on an auto licence. Given the strange ways the DVLA applies law and policy. Does anyone have a link to any official line on this question? If you found this question because you need to know the answer to this question because you are an auto licence holder considering buying a semi-auto, my advice is you get it in writing from the DVLA or DSA and triple check it with your insurance company. I wouldn't take any chances as you could possibly find yourself illegal and uninsured (therefore illegal again) in the event of an incident. Please don't just take bloke-down-the-pub's word for it, or even your driving instructors. (I know, instructors are often just as confused on these finer points). Stay safe, and legal car insurance. Ram . How to Paint Engine CompartmentsAfter years of heat, moisture and dirt, the paint in an engine compartment tends to fade or even flake off. Painting an engine compartment is not only for looks, but also for practical reasons. Paint helps keep the engine compartment from rusting away. Rust in the engine compartment spreads to other parts of the vehicle, including the wheel wells and frame. If let go too far, the rust could affect the engine mounts, which keep the engine from bouncing around, or falling out of the bottom of the engine compartment. Difficulty:Moderately Challenging Instructions Things You'll Need Degreaser Bristle brush Lacquer thinner Rags Masking tape Newspaper Paint gun Step by Step : 1 Cover any wiring harness plugs with plastic, so that the water and chemicals do not get into the plugs. Spray the engine compartment with degreaser. Allow the compartment to soak for 15 to 20 minutes. 2 Scrub the engine compartment with the bristle brush. Rinse it well with water. Allow the engine compartment to dry. Repeat for extra-stubborn grease. 3 Wipe the engine compartment down with the lacquer thinner to remove any oily residue from the surface. 4 Tape off any area you do not want to paint. Cover the larger areas with newspaper. Cover the fenders with newspaper, unless you plan to paint the body of the car. 5 Mix the paint according to the manufacturer's instructions. Fill the paint gun. Spray the engine compartment using the paint gun. Allow the first coat to dry according to the manufacturer's instructions. Paint with at least one more coat. Tips & Warnings For a shiny engine compartment, use glossy paint. For a "flat" look, use flat paint. You do not need to use heat paint for the engine compartment, but if you can find the color you need, heat paint is recommended. It will last longer.
Ram . How to Sand HeadlightsAutomobile headlights created from plastic tend to become damaged over time from flying debris on the road. At first, the damage leaves small scratches and dings in the headlights, but as time goes on, the damage adds up, dimming the lights and limiting their usefulness. Sanding the headlight lenses helps to restore the usefulness of the lights, removing the layer of plastic containing the scratches and dings so that the light shines through clearly. Difficulty:Moderate Instructions Things You'll Need Car washing soap Bucket Rags Towel Masking tape Sandpaper Rubbing compound Buffing cloth Wax Step by Step : 1 Clean the headlights prior to the sanding process. Remove any dirt or debris present using a clean cloth with light soapy water. Rinse the headlight with clean water and pat dry with a towel. 2 Place masking tape around the headlight area on the edges of painted surfaces to protect the paint from scratches when sanding. 3 Submerge 600-grit wet/dry sandpaper in a bucket of water until saturated and dampen the headlight that you're sanding clear with water. Apply the sandpaper to the damp headlight using back and forth strokes with the paper to clear damage to the lens. It will take up to 10 minutes to clear the obvious cracks and dings from the headlight's surface. Keep the sandpaper wet at all times. Clear any sanding residue from the lens with a piece of cloth. 4 Sand the surface of the headlight with 1,500-grit wet/dry sandpaper for another 10 minutes, this time to clear some of the cloudiness from the lens. The 1,000-grit paper will not clear all of the cloudiness, but will create a frosted lens look. Wipe away the sanding residue with a cloth. 5 Sand the surface of the lens a final time with 2,000-grit wet/dry sandpaper. Use the sandpaper on the lens surface until you create a smooth surface with no signs of scratching or dings. Remove the sanding residue and pat the lens dry with a clean towel. The cloudiness will remain, however, as the sandpaper does scratch the lens, only the scratches are a collection of micro-scratches that are easy to remove. 6 Apply an abrasive rubbing compound to a buffing cloth and then buff the headlight lens with the compound to remove the micro-scratches and restore clarity to the lens. Buff in small circles until you can easily see through the lens. 7 Remove the masking tape and then wax the lens to finish the polishing process and protect it from further damage.
